Jagjit Singh, the famous ghazal singer was born on 8th February, 1941. His siblings include four sisters and two brothers and is known as Jeet by his family. Jagjit had a liking towards music from his early childhood. His guru was Pandit Chaganlal Sharma for two years in Ganganagar. He devoted more time learning Khayal Thumri and Dhrupad forms of Indian Classical from Ustad Jamaal Khan of the Sainia Gharana School. During his struggling days, he has sung advertisements, jingles and even performed at weddings and parties.
Jagjit studied in Khalsa High school in Ganganagar, and graduated from DAV College, Jalandhar in Arts. He also has a post-graduate degree in history from Kurukshetra University, Haryana.
Jagjit’s first ghazal album “The Unforgettable” hit the music stores in 1976. Its emphasis on melody and a fresh voice was a departure from the existing style of ghazal rendition, which was heavily based on classical and semi-classical Indian music. Skeptics had their own reservations, purists scorned it but it was widely successful among listeners and the album set new sales records.
